The school motto is “Frontier Spirit” and embodies a desire to seek new horizons, encountering the obstacles and challenges along the way and overcoming them. The words were proposed by the first principal, Takao Hinata, as a ‘pioneering will’ mimicking the movements in western education and progress. Our students aim to better themselves by not merely passing base requirements, but by positively taking on new and difficult projects in order to reach their limits and push them to new heights. In this sense, our students represent all kinds of pioneers, from those that explored the vast American West to those that have walked on the moon and beyond. With science as our means, we seek to prepare students for a lifetime of self-betterment and progress.
Courses and Electives
General Course
In the first grade, every student learns the same subject with a choice of three art classes. From the 2nd grade, they can learn in a variety of subjects for their desired courses based on the arts and sciences. In mathematics and English classes, small classes are offered.We offer the education not only for studying but also for experiencing club and volunteer activites; our aim of education is to foster a person who has ambition and can contribute to society.
Science & Mathematics Course
Students who have a strong interest in science and mathematics and want to become an academic researcher in the field of science, medicine and engineering in future will take this course. From the 2nd grade, we prepare the different curriculums for students who desire these fields. Students will explore the topics of various sciences by accomplishing projects, experiments, and research. Our educational aim is to train students to build logical and scientific thinking skills and to cultivate human resources that will lead to leadership positions in a several fields.
School Life
Kofu Minami High School consists of three grade levels, equivalent to the United States’ 10th, 11th, and 12th educational grades. Each grade holds seven classes of roughly 40 students, amounting to a total of 840 students. Advanced placement is available.
Homeroom
School begins at 8:30. Student attendance is done and homeroom teachers give news and information about classes, events, or changes to the daily and weekly schedules.
Classes
There are seven class periods in a daily schedule. Eighth period is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays as extra lectures for certain subjects. These eighth periods are only for the advanced placement classes. Periods are 45 minutes long. There is a ten minute break between periods.
First period – 8:50 – 9:35
Second period – 9:45 – 10:30
Third period – 10:40 – 11:25
Fourth period – 11:35 – 12:20
Lunch break
Fifth period – 1:00 – 1:45
Sixth period – 1:55 – 2:40
Seventh period – 2:50 – 3:35
End of school cleaning
Eighth period – 4:00 – 4:45
Lunch break
Students eat lunch with their classmates. They may bring a lunch from home or buy one from a convenience store nearby. Short club activities may happen during this period
After school
After seventh period, students have a homeroom meeting and participate in a short cleaning of the school. At 4:00, students may return home or participate in club activities such as tea ceremony or calligraphy. By 7:00, all students have to leave the school.
